Wifey was born out of a desire to create something new. Janine Foeller was offered a storefront on Flatbush Avenue, and she immediately thought of Simone Shubuck, an artist whose work she long admired. Foeller wondered if the two of them could develop a space that exists outside of the traditional parameters and expectations of an exhibition space. A space where unexpected collaborations could be realized, nurtured and shared with the community.
For decades, Shubuck has incorporated her longtime passions of food and flowers directly into her work. Which got Foeller thinking: Could they involve those pursuits into the space itself?
And that is where Wifey is today. It is a space, but it's also a process. The more Foeller and Shubuck reached out to friends and collaborators, the more the concept evolved. They called people who make stuff *besides* art, like amazing food, unusual beverages, the best coffee and tea, hand-churned cultured butter and freshly baked bread. It turns out that chefs and artisans were also looking to create and share something new.
